Sushi Chef

Job Description

A Sushi Chef is responsible for preparing high-quality sushi and other Japanese dishes, ensuring excellent presentation, freshness, and taste. The role requires strong knife skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of Japanese culinary traditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare sushi, sashimi, nigiri, maki rolls, and specialty dishes
• Select, inspect, and properly store fresh fish and seafood
• Maintain high standards of food safety, hygiene, and sanitation
• Develop and present dishes with precision and artistic presentation
• Prepare rice, sauces, and garnishes according to recipes and standards
• Manage inventory and assist with ordering ingredients
• Maintain cleanliness of the sushi station and kitchen equipment
• Interact with customers (if working at a sushi bar) and provide recommendations
• Ensure consistent portioning and quality control
• Collaborate with kitchen staff and restaurant management

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience as a sushi chef or Japanese kitchen cook
• Strong knife handling and fish preparation skills
• Knowledge of sushi rice preparation and seasoning techniques
• Understanding of seafood selection and handling practices
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent attention to detail and presentation skills
• Food safety certification (preferred or required depending on location)
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
