Job Description

About Us

Conversion is building the agentic marketing automation platform. Most marketing teams today are stuck stitching together outdated software, enrichment tools, and disconnected workflows. Funnels are broken. Messaging is misaligned. Teams are flying blind.

We're fixing that. Conversion gives marketing and growth teams AI agents that do the work: building campaigns, optimizing sends, scoring leads, and running your go-to-market on autopilot. From acquisition to activation to retention, it's all managed in a single platform.

We’ve raised over $28 million from top firms such as Abstract Ventures, True Ventures, and HOF Capital and powering go-to-market for 4000+ customers.

We’re a lean, high-performing team in San Francisco. If you’re excited about building a generational company and doing your best work alongside world-class teammates; we’d love to meet you.

About the Role

Hey there! James here 👋, co-founder and CTO at Conversion. Just wanted to share my thoughts on the perfect candidate we're looking to join our engineering team.

First off, I want to stress the technical difficulty and scale of what we're building here at Conversion. The reason marketing automation platforms haven't seen a new player in decades is because building one is hard. Our platform needs to handle terabytes of data syncs per customer with the utmost reliability, coordinate complex workflows that automate mission critical "go-to-market" processes, handle form submissions that directly generate revenue for customers, and serve high delivering emails to millions of our customer's recipients.

With that being said, here's what we're looking for in a backend software engineer to join our core team:

  • Product focused: There is quite a bit of features that go into a marketing automation platform, and so we're looking for folks that can own entire products and scope out, design, and build features end to end. We believe the best PMs are engineers who understand the pain point, since they can best evaluate both the benefit and the cost of building a feature.

  • Built for scale: You light up at the challenge of building systems that reach millions of users and billions of events. You're detail-oriented, because at our scale, the little things matter. You're energized by the fact that your work has massive, tangible impact. If someone receives a marketing email from one of our customers, chances are it's coming from infrastructure you built!

  • Love building for customers: We at Conversion are extremely close with customers- every customer gets their own Slack channel in our organization for faster communication, and we add every engineer to the channel to directly answer questions, fix bugs, and build features! You feel the urgency much more when you hear it directly from the end user.

  • Intellectually curious: Conversion engineers are group of bright-eyed and constantly curious individuals, who love debating database designs (or if we'd win in a fight against an ostrich) at lunchtime.

This role is in-person 5 days/week in San Francisco.

You Might Be a Good Fit If You

  • Have a several years of relevant industry experience building robust and reliable systems

  • Have a startup mindset - Scrappy, intelligent, and entrepreneurially minded individuals interested in joining a fast paced startup and looking for early ownership and growth

  • Have experience with our tech stack:

    • Go is our backend language

    • Kafka for large scale data streaming

    • Temporal for durable job execution

    • PostgreSQL and ClickHouse as our databases

    • GCP for cloud hosting

You Might Be a Great Fit If You

  • Keep up to date on tech Twitter

  • Have a great track record of side projects, apps, hackathons. Our engineers have built a live streaming security system for their parent's new house, a database from scratch, a better "Splitwise" app, and hosted our Minecraft server, all while at Conversion!
