Job Description
THE ROLE
Reporting to the President, Code Nation's next Managing Director, New York City will be responsible for leading the day to day operations for Code Nation’s New York City office, ensuring the Code Nation mission is being successfully implemented, and that regional and organizational goals are being attained. Your duties will include, but will not be limited to: managing a team of approximately 11 staff members who directly lead programs; ensuring financial solvency and securing revenue; establishing and managing school, corporate, and other public and private partnerships; creating and implementing fundraising strategies; ensuring the ongoing quality and fidelity of Code Nation New York City’s programs, partnerships and culture; and ultimately growing the organization in the New York City Area.
Serving as the primary champion of Code Nation’s impact locally, the Managing Director leads efforts to ensure quality programs for students, while also ensuring the sustainability and continuity of the New York region. The Managing Director represents the organization within the New York community by mobilizing powerful coalitions to catalyze greater opportunity for communities and students historically excluded from tech.
Additionally, the Managing Director is a member of Code Nation’s Senior Leadership Team, which supports the organization by developing the growth strategy and operational plan, ensuring strong budget management and stewardship of organizational resources, considering of expansion opportunities, leading local and national fundraising and brand building efforts, creating and refining organizational policies, and providing overall organizational management. As a member of this team, the Managing Director strengthens the connection between Code Nation’s national initiatives and the local work in New York City. Through this role, the Managing Director also advances Code Nation’s values by ensuring strong working relationships between Code Nation’s national teams and New York City-based staff members.
The salary range for this position is $115,000- $150,000. This is a hybrid role; Code Nation New York City staff work from our Brooklyn office, from home, and onsite at school program partner locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Fundraising & Board Development:
- Set and meet quarterly and annual fundraising targets to support the sustainability and growth of Code Nation in New York City.
- Grow a sustainable, diversified local funding base (e.g., individuals, corporations, foundations, public funding etc.)
- Cultivate and steward a high-impact Local Advisory Council to support Code Nation New York City's strategic planning and fundraising efforts.
- Ensure the ongoing engagement and stewardship of an ever-growing portfolio of individuals, corporations, foundations, public funding.
- Achieve the financial sustainability goals for the New York City region
Regional Leadership & Management
- Collaborate with the President to develop and revise short and long-term regional strategic plans for Code Nation in New York City.
- Lead the New York City region towards ambitious goals, using data-driven decision making to monitor and address problems, improve performance, and increase sustainability.
- Oversee regional financial operations to meet revenue and budget requirements to support programs and operations.
- Recruit, develop and lead Code Nation New York City staff, fostering a highly effective work culture with strong leadership development to all staff through quality coaching, feedback, and performance reviews to sustain the internal talent required for the long-term success of the region.
- In partnership with the Program Director, ensure ongoing effective program planning, implementation, and evaluation to ensure programs are meeting Code Nation standards for quality, fidelity, and impact and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Serve as a strong regional leader and advocate for DEI and Code Nation’s core values.
Partnerships & Communications
- Serve as the key external voice and representative of Code Nation in New York City, demonstrating an exceptional and compelling articulation of Code Nation’s mission, values and partnership opportunities.
- Build and steward effective partnerships with diverse stakeholders to advance Code Nation New York City’s mission and goals.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across the public and private sectors including local school districts, technology companies, government institutions, community organizations, peer organizations, and higher education institutions.
- Publish and communicate local program results demonstrating Code Nation’s impact in schools.
Organizational Leadership & Management:
- Serve as a member of the Code Nation Senior Leadership Team.
- Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to:
- develop the growth strategy and operational plan,
- ensure strong budget management and stewardship of organizational resources,
- consider programmatic and organizational expansion opportunities,
- lead local and national fundraising and brand building efforts,
- create and refine organizational policies, and
- provide overall organizational management.
- Ensure strong working relationships between Code Nation’s national teams and New York City-based staff members.
Organizational Culture & Engagement
- Serve as a strong organizational champion of Code Nation’s cultural values and commitments; actively working to participate in and enhance policies/initiatives that can drive greater anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, transparency, collaboration, celebration, growth mindset, and respect for the whole person in all dimensions of Code Nation’s work.
- Lead a regional leadership team with a deep commitment to building an environment that respects and values diversity with special attention paid to the inclusion of remote team members.
- Foster an org-wide success-oriented, accountable team-based environment that motivates staff to work cooperatively and effectively towards the organization’s vision and goals.
- Model and inspire other Code Nation employees to meet the highest ethical standards at all times, prioritizing the safety of the team and the wellbeing and dignity of Code Nation students.
- Support inclusive initiatives that engage students, alumni, school partners, volunteers, and families as partners in Code Nation’s success and investors in its future.

Qualifications
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Success in this position will require, but not be limited to, the following proven experiences and competencies:
What you’ve accomplished (required):
- ~10+ years of professional experience including ~3+ years experience managing full-time staff, and ~2+ years experience in a senior leadership position
- Demonstrated ability to create and lead the execution of a strategy that met or beat its objectives for either an entire organization of comparable size or for a region of a larger, geographically matrixed organization
- Experience managing programmatic and financial forecasting, including regular progress to goals meetings and tightly managing data integrity to ensure accuracy
Skills you have developed and knowledge you have acquired:
- Ability to lead, develop, and inspire a team of committed professionals in a people-centric way; successfully built capacity in others (e.g. development staff, program staff, etc.) to produce strong outputs in programs, partnerships, fundraising, communications and/or marketing initiatives in a way that inspires fulfillment and belonging in others
